Oxblood fishbowls & planters

These planters and fishbowls are remarkable for their extra-ordinary glazes. You can actually see the background reflected in their mirror-like surfaces.

Apparently, it took centuries to get this glaze colour right. The red is created by copper, which is normally used to create a green glaze. However, if the glaze is reduced during firing by a lack of oxygen, then it becomes this amazing rich maroon-toned red. There is a famous myth associated with the development of this glaze.
