Antiques Horses

Clay horses carry a long history — from the tomb figures of ancient China to the folk pottery traditions of Europe and Africa, the horse has been shaped in clay for centuries as a symbol of strength, freedom, and good fortune. These pieces were produced by Liebermann Pottery during its heyday, when Sammy and Mary Liebermann's Johannesburg studio was at the height of its craft. Each one bears the marks of its making: the slight irregularities, the weight of the clay, the glaze pooling in the hollows. Founded in 1956 and once one of the most prolific handmade pottery studios in South Africa, Liebermann no longer produces its own ware. These horses are a reminder of that era.
